When to call us

Please call us straight away if you have

  • Severe toothache that pain relief isn’t helping
  • An adult tooth that’s been knocked out
  • A broken, cracked or chipped tooth that hurts
  • A crown, filling or bridge that’s come loose or broken
  • Swelling in your face, jaw or gums
  • Bleeding that won’t stop after an injury
  • An abscess or other signs of infection

If an adult tooth has been knocked out
Pick it up by the crown, not the root. If it’s dirty, give it a quick rinse in milk or water. Don’t scrub the root. Try to put it back in the socket, or keep it in milk, and come and see us within 60 minutes. If it’s a baby tooth, don’t put it back in, but do bring your child in to be checked.

When to go to the emergency department
If swelling is spreading towards your eye or neck, or you’re having trouble breathing or swallowing, please go to your nearest emergency department. Outside our hours, you can call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice.
