How root canal treatment works
Why it’s worth it
The benefits of saving a tooth
- You keep your own tooth There’s no gap to fill with an implant, bridge or denture.
- Relief from pain Treating the infected nerve eases the ache and stops the infection spreading.
- Comfortable chewing Once it’s restored, the tooth works just like your others.
- Often more affordable Saving a tooth usually costs less than replacing it.
Risks and limitations
What to consider
- The tooth may feel tender for a few days afterwards
- A root-treated tooth can be more brittle, which is why a crown is often recommended
- Occasionally infection persists and the tooth needs retreatment or removal
- Rarely, a fine instrument can separate inside a narrow canal
