Why it’s needed
Why bone can shrink
- A tooth has been missing for a while
- Bone has been lost to infection or gum disease
- An injury has damaged the jaw
- The jaw is naturally narrow in that spot
Graft materials
The different
types of graft
- Your own bone Taken from another area of your mouth. It heals very well, but it means a second small surgical site.
- Animal-derived bone Processed bovine or porcine bone, which is widely used and well researched.
- Donor bone Carefully processed and sterilised human bone, so no second site is needed.
- Synthetic material A lab-made material that acts as a framework for your own bone to grow into.

Will I need a bone graft?
Will it add time to my treatment?
A small graft placed with the implant usually doesn’t. A larger graft may need a few months to heal before the implant goes in.
